fold was written on a day that I felt especially anxious. I sat down and wrote, without any goal or core idea. What I found was that the simple act of manipulating a phrase, of folding musical material like origami, was soothing for me, and helped to calm me. After I finished the piece, I found that my anxiety had disappeared.
